Ilona Kryczek, Ph.D.
Dr. Kryczek obtained her Ph.D. in immunology from Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy Polish Academy of Sciences, Wroclaw, Poland. She performed postdoctoral work in immunology at INSERM U-131 in Paris, France. In 2004, she joined the Section of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Tulane University, New Orleans, LA. In 2006 she moved to Ann Arbor, University of Michigan.
Interaction between human immune cells and cancer cells
The etiology and progress of cancer is strongly associated with inflammatory environment. People with a chronic inflammatory process have an increased risk of developing several cancers suggesting the strong immune inflammatory conditioning. Although, extrinsic mechanisms provided by the tumor microenvironment are essential for forming the stem cell niche, the involvement of host immune system in this process is not understood. We believe that immune cells can actively and directly regulate the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in tumor dissemination, relapse and metastasis.
